How do you become an Airline Pilot?
The Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) License is the minimal certification needed to fly for any United States based airline, also known as FAA Part 121 regulated air carriers. Several commercial aviation jobs, including many charter and government careers, require this certification. The ATP is the highest possible license obtainable under the FAA. Once a student attains the Commercial Pilot License, training is generally completed and certification for ATP can be applied for once necessary flight experience requirements are met.

Fluent in the English Language
Obtain a Student Pilot License
Hold an FAA First Class Medical

Completion Standards
Below are the experience requirements for the ATP under FAR 14 CFR § 61.159
1,500 hours of flight experience
500 hours of Cross Country
250 hours as Pilot In Command (PIC)
100 hours of night flight
75 hours of instrument flight

The Airline Pilot Timeline
Flight training for the ATP is typically completed within a 250 flight hour curriculum. Accelerated students can successfully accomplish this training within a 12 month time-frame. Once through this primary stage, accruing necessary flight experience to meet FAA ATP certification requirements can be achieved through various employment opportunities as a commercial pilot. Those choosing to pursue a fast-track training plan can anticipate to go from zero experience to airline pilot within a 2 to 3 year timeline.
